Volunteer

Olympia Fields Hospital offers volunteer opportunities in service, clerical support, and spiritual care. Service volunteers provide non-medical assistance through patient escort, registration, information desk support, mail and flower delivery, hospice, emergency department, and food and nutrition services. Clerical and spiritual care volunteers support hospital operations while offering comfort to patients and families.

Who are our volunteers?

Volunteers are men, women and teens who:

  • Come from all walks of life, but share a common desire to help others
  • Contribute time and service to assist with non-medical service to patients
  • Possess a cheerful, pleasant attitude and willingness to take an interest in the patient, his or her family and visitors
  • Demonstrate trustworthiness, dependability and promptness in responding to assignments
  • Participate in the hospital orientation and the required volunteer training program
  • Observe hospital regulations and wear the designated volunteer uniform and hospital identification badge
  • Maintain all patient information in strict confidence

When do volunteers work?

Volunteers usually work once or twice a week for three to four hours at a time. Volunteers are needed seven days a week during the morning, afternoon and evening hours.

Volunteer training

All volunteers attend a group orientation and have a minimum of two days training to familiarize them with the hospital and volunteer operations. In addition, when volunteers first assume their responsibilities, they work with other volunteers in the same position until they feel comfortable.

Each facility may have different opportunities, age requirements and available service hours for certain volunteer positions. Be sure to check with the volunteer coordinator or apply online for the facility you are interested in.

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteering in a healthcare setting brings certain requirements that have been established to ensure your safety and the safety of our patients, visitors, and staff. Please review the following requirements that must be fulfilled prior to beginning volunteer service:

  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time your application is submitted.
  • Attend initial volunteer orientation.
  • Commit to 6 months of service, totaling 100 volunteer hours. This typically means volunteering 3–4 hours per week.
  • Be in good health and able to pass a health and drug screening. The health screening includes TB test and up-to-date immunizations. Volunteers must also receive an annual influenza vaccination during flu season.
  • Submit to a background check.
  • Provide a valid photo ID.
  • Visa Restrictions: This opportunity is not available for B-1, B-2, H1-B, or H-4 visa holders.
